British comedian and host Ricky Gervais ticks off celebs at the Golden Globes.
"Hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones,” is how Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr described the ceremony of the 68th Annual Golden Globes, held in Los Angeles on Sunday. The actors’ comments were directed at the host for the night, British Comedian Ricky Gervais, who took potshots at the stars and the organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, in what is being touted as the meanest Globes ever.
Gervais, who hosted the Globes for the second time, started by saying, “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.”
While introducing Dawney Jr, Gervais said, “Many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic (a rehab centre) and Los Angeles County Jail.”
He introduced Bruce Willis as “Ashton Kutcher’s dad”, referring to the fact that Kutcher,32, is married to Willis’ ex-wife Demi Moore, 48. He called 84-year-old Hugh Hefner as “the walking dead” and about

, he said, “I was sure the award for best special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster.”
Towards the end of the evening, actors Tom Hanks and Tim Allen turned tables on Gervais. Allen said, “We can recall when Gervais was a slightly chubby and very kind comedian,” to which Hanks replied, “neither of which he is now.” An article in The Washington Post wrote, “Are we at war with England? If not, then why have been subjected to two years of Ricky Gervais...?”
During the ceremony, Twitter was flooded with comments about Gervais, and the official website of the Globes has started a debate on whether he crossed a line.
