The World Cup may be over, but its after- effects linger on. Especially those that come with calories attached. Delhiites who binged on beer and junk food during the tournament say they’re now grappling with the extra weight they’ve put on.

“Matches were like parties — socialising and a lot of eating. I’ve put on about 2 kgs since,” says Sushant Verma, 28. Swati Rao, 25, had 7 pints of beer just during the India vs Pakistan match, and ordered six pizzas for 12 friends. “Now, I’ve hit the gym,” she says.

Fitness experts, too, say gyms lay barren all through the last month. “People watched matches till midnight and slept late. So, very few made it for workout sessions. Since Monday, our membership has increased by 25%,” says Rahul Kharbanda of Athena Fitness centre in Dwarka. “Even though we screened matches during workouts, our customers dropped by 40%,” says Jitender Rajput of Muscle Buzz in Gurgaon.

“Not gymming for a few days doesn’t matter but people went overboard — matches were accompanied with pizzas or fries and lots of beer,” says Som Tugnait of Metal Gym in Punjabi Bagh.

“As India went ahead, the consumption increased. With beer, snacks and colas, people consumed about 1,200 calories per match,” says Deepti Tiwari, nutritionist at Artemis Health Institute.
