Time for homecoming

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had rounded up 473 stray dogs from in and around the Commonwealth Games venues and relocated them to animal shelters.

The storm has passed and the rehabilitation campaign has begun. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had rounded up 473 stray dogs from in and around the Commonwealth Games venues and relocated them to animal shelters. The dogs were to be later released in the same streets from where they were picked. Now that the mega event is over, organisations and volunteers have started to transfer the dogs back.

Friendicoes SECA, an animal-welfare NGO, has posted on its website: “If any dog has gone missing from your colony/area from September 22 onwards, please do make a serious attempt to visit the Friendicoes shelter in Jungpura, and at Ghazipur Veterinary Hospital as we do not have much confidence in the location being given to us for the release of the dogs.”

Gautam Barat, co-founder of the NGO, says, “We tagged the dogs with coupons, which had information about the areas from where they were picked. However, stray dogs might also have been picked from areas other than the Games venues.” A group of volunteers have created a website, www.cwgdogs.in. It displays dogs that had been picked up and sent to various shelters.
