It’s hard to imagine Mumbai without its public transport. Especially it’s crowded local trains and BEST buses. But it is equally difficult to imagine waiting in the relentless afternoon sun waiting for transportation to arrive to take you to your desired destination.
Not anymore.
In what could be a major boost to the city’s public transport system, Google Transit now offers the availability of BEST buses and Mumbai local train routes and schedule information on Google Maps.
Available both on desktop and on mobile phones for city commuters, the application was launched earlier this month. The service already includes information for the Delhi Metro rail, Banglore and Pune bus services in India, in addition to 450 cities worldwide.
“Mumbai transit was our priority given the usage of these services in the city. And it is the first city where we have launched both the train and the bus transit information,” says Manik Gupta, product manager — local and maps, Google India.
To make use of this service, search for information on how to reach from place A to place B on Google Maps. The result shows a map with a possible route and driving directions for the commuter. Choose the transit option by clicking the train or bus icon (next to the car icon) and get first hand information on available routes and the step by step directions including frequency, and travel

duration for each leg of the trip in text and on the map.
By using this service commuters and tourists can find their way seamlessly around the city using both trains and buses. “We have used multiple sources to put together transport information for Mumbai. While traffic was not a factor while determining train timings, bus timings listed assume average traffic conditions,” says Gupta.
