Truth is irrelevant

As children, we are all taught that the greatest virtue is to always speak the TRUTH. The concept of truth has always eluded me. In architecture school, we were taught another concept — that of SPACE. Space that envelopes us as we move through the process of life, space that is constantly evolving as we move through it. Space and time are constantly in a continuum, which ensures that we can never re-visit the experiences that we once go through.

Hence, I decided that my architectural thesis must be about “PERCEIVED SPACE”. To sum up my years work in one line is to say that space is never perceived/experienced by any two individuals in the same way, each person will experience even a simple event like walking through park very differently.

Every individual’s experience will vary based on his height, clarity of eye sight, degree of his sense of smell, sharpness of hearing, experiences that occurred prior to the commencement of the ‘walk in the park’, mood, light sensitivity, kind of clothing, etc. I can go on and on… (you see I spent six months writing and making a film about this).

Based on this premise, I started evaluating how each one of us perceives ‘TRUTH’. Truth is what each one of us believes is a fact or reality. But our perception of truth comes from what we individually experience via our senses. And because each one of us has been endowed with different sensibilities, which can easily cloud our version of the truth, each one of us lives in a make believe world of our own true experiences. We never really agree on a thing being absolutely TRUE.
