Time to make your tweet count. The third edition of Mumbai Twestival is set to take place on March 24, and this time the city’s stray dogs are the prime focus with the NGO Welfare of Stray Dogs (WSD) getting the funds raised. “Everyone in the city complains about stray dogs but this is an opportunity to do something about it. By supporting the WSD, we are ensuring that city’s strays are sterilised and are removed off the roads in a more humane manner,” says Rashi Vidyasagar, a student, who is coordinating the Mumbai Twestival along with Anisha Ahuja.

On March 24, those supporting the Mumbai Twestival will turn up at between 7 pm and 10 pm, and watch India take on Australia in the quarterfinals as well. “They have agreed to put up a big screen and everyone can cheer our team on together. We wanted to plan other activities too, but we thought that with the World Cup on, this would draw a better response,” says Vidyasagar.

Those who cannot make it to the actual event can contribute in other ways and be a part of Twestival India, which will be celebrated on the same day across seven Indian cities including Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Cochin, Pune and Hyderabad. Bloggers can log on to BlogAdda.com and blog about the event. Each blog that mentions the event will ensure that Rs 250 is donated. Twestival India has partnered with Give India for these donations.

A Twestival or Twitter-Festival is a global series of events organised by volunteers around the world under short timescales, and brings people offline for a cause. Every year, tweeps who organize the Twestival, pick two NGOs to support, one at the global level and the other at the local level. The one at the global level sees tweeple across countries working together to raise money for the cause chosen whereas the local one is focused on an NGO in the city. The first Mumbai Twestival took place in 2009.
