Till a few months ago, Chris Hadfield was an unknown face even in his home country, Canada. But the man, who landed on the International Space Station (ISS) on December 21, 2012, has gone on to become a Twitter sensation almost overnight. Tweeting about everyday occurrences in space, he has used his handle, @Cmdr_Hadfield, and other social media to share his experience to over five lakh followers on Earth.

The enthusiastic astronaut has shared snippets that range from the “beauty of the harbor in Havana” and “beautiful blood orange, freshly-delivered from California” to images of thunderclouds, as seen from the space station. His daily live tweets have got him a lot of support back on terra firma and the space cadet is the first to acknowledge it. Hadfield’s tweet on March 12 went something like this: “Good Morning, Earth! While I slept we went over half a million people following on Twitter! The interest and support amazes me. Thank you!“

Now even as he takes over as the first-ever commander from Canada at the ISS, we take a look back at images he has shared from the final frontier.
