Where seeing isn’t believing

The next time you are thinking of applauding a director after watching one of his films, think again — chances are someone else may have directed it. The latest film to join the ranks of reportedly ghost-directed films is Jashn, which has been directed by Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala.

However, buzz is that Mahesh Bhatt has directed major portions of the film. A source from Vishesh Films says, “Mahesh Bhatt is involved with the direction and has overseen many scenes. He is leading it at present.”

Bhatt, on his part, says that he’s directing specific performances and not the entire film. “My direction is limited to directing the performances. I told actors what to do on the sets of Jashn, just like I directed John in my daughter’s film, Jism. Mohit Suri and Kunal Deshmukh consult me while making films but it’s their vision,” he says.

That’s not all. The film’s promotional video starring Adhyayan Suman and Anjana Sukhani has been directed by Mohit Suri. However, Suri maintains that directing a video for someone else’s film shouldn’t be a problem. “This is not the first time I’ve shot a video for some other film,” he says.

Jashn is not the only film in this league. Even Dhoom and Dhoom 2, credited to Sanjay Gadhvi, some claimed had been ghost directed by Aditya Chopra— a rumour that became stronger when Gadhvi left the Yash Raj camp.

Trade analyst Tarun Adarsh testifies to the trend of ghost-directing in the industry. “It (ghost-directing)
definitely happens,” he says, adding, “But it is not as common as the media makes it out to be.”
