Stand-up comic Anand Chulani is not sure what his debut gig at The Comedy Store will be like. For now, he’s relying on his singing and dancing skills and hoping his audience is a sporting bunch.
Having stepped into improvisational comedy master Adam Dow’s shoes, Chulani will lead a troupe of seven skilled desi comics who are sure to play some funny games tomorrow. “There is no preparation to be done. Improv comedy is not like acting. It is spontaneous, challenging and funny,” says Chulani, who has previously toured the US with comedy sensation Russell Peters and even managed a Bollywood dance stint for an episode on outsourcing in The Simpsons.
Chulani, who shifted base from Los Angeles to Mumbai early this year, likes to call himself a laughter coach. “I’m an Anthony Robbins-certified instructor,” he says, adding that he has worked with thousands of office-goers and children across the world. “The idea is to boost their self-esteem and make them a more confident bunch.” Currently, he’s in talks with Raell Padamsee and Anupam Kher to impart his infectious humour to tiny tots and budding actors.

{{/usCountry}}His show tomorrow will feature interactive games such as those seen on the improv comedy game show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? “The format is the same, but the game will be different. I’m working with a very talented group. They are all professionals in the field. We just hope the audience is out there to have some good and unexpected fun,” he adds.
