The powerful showing that JJ Valaya is well known for marked the ‘real’ finale of this season’s Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week. At his show, JJ made sure that grandeur was complemented by clean looks. He started his showing with black and then white with no or minimal embellishments. The collection, with its music and backdrop gave the feeling of a finale. And it sure was!
Earlier in the day, Littleshilpa made her debut presentation of some of the most fascinating accessories on the runway. Headgear with lighting and skyscrapers, were received well by the crowd. Nida Mahmood, with her flamboyant presentation of saris worn with jeans, dresses and interesting headgear and bags started the day off in a lively manner.
Alpana & Neeraj showed that great creativity can also mean wearability. Though their collection was impressive even on the dimly lit runway, fashion shows should have bright lighting if the idea is to showcase the collection. Atsu was impressive with jackets, pants, dresses. One of the few designers who never falters in any season is Rahul Mishra. His collection of well made and beautiful clothes and a series of reversible jackets proved he’s here to stay. Rahul Reddy, yet another bright spark, came out with an array of jersey knit dresses, capes etc that were high on creativity and style.
Monapali had some of the most interesting creations in their lineup. Ritu Beri brought in Army and patriotism on the catwalk with her models walking with military appeal in velvet gowns, dresses, etc. Ranna Gill had some very interesting and stylish pieces. Swapan & Seema too presented their collection.
Once the curtains finally fell, one thing was sure — the talent made the event. The rest could well be done away with next season. New faces should be chosen carefully as I did not really see any exceptional talent in the bunch this time. The idea shouldn’t be to make the event the biggest in terms of numbers, instead it should the biggest in terms of the quality of participating designers.

Show goes on
The absence of two show stoppers — Sushmita Sen and Tabu — for designers Ritu Beri and JJ Valaya respectively didn’t seem to matter much. While Beri was herself the showstopper (see pic) for her show, Valaya used veteran model Sheetal Mallar as his showstopper. Beri’s stint on the ramp received a
thundering applause from everyone in the audience.
Game on for kalmadi
Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman of Commonwealth Games 2010 Organising Committee, came to catch the action at WIFW. He was in the front row of designer Ranna Gill’s show and was also seen admiring the designer autorickshaws
stationed in the foyer of
the venue.
Models face the music
Models at the Fashion Week found ways to unwind in-between shows. Backstage, we heard loud music coming out of Ambika Pillai’s green room. Some models were also singing along. The two hot-favourite songs were the classic — Every Breath You Take and the chart-topper by Kings of Leon, Sex On Fire.
Minissha in town
Actress Minissha Lamba, who walked for designer Ranna Gill on Monday, said she was in the Capital only for Gill’s show. “I specially flew down to Delhi for Ranna’s show. After the cancellation of shows on the first day, this has given me an other chance to be in the Capital.” Her plans in Delhi included getting some sleep, sushi and shopping. “A friend owns a shop in a mall and I’ve asked her to keep it open till I get there,” she said.
