If there’s a fashion week, some trends do emerge. But be warned, not all of them are right for you! Here are some trends you can safely adapt from the recently-concluded Delhi Couture Week:

Do invest in a few well-cut jackets. JJ Valaya did a beautiful short series, Meera and Muzzafar had some nice quilted ones. Wear them over anything — a salwar suit, a sari, or even pants.

Wear a halter neck if you have great collarbones. A white halter-neck dress with a cinched waist is stunning on a slim frame, like at Shantanu and Nikhil’s show.

Lehengas

worn over fitted pyjamas are very sexy. Try them under saris too, it’s more of an adventure.

Do play with colour. One of our strengths as Indians is that we can carry off an amazing colour palette. Meera Muzaffar did a lovely shocking fuchsia with royal blue, and there were some fabulously rich yellows, courtesy Manav Gangwani.

And now for the no nos:

Please avoid the following under pain of being labelled a fashion victim.

Feathers. Unless you are a bird, or planning to take a glide from the 125th floor. Leave it for the damsels on the ramp.

See-through lehengas. Even on ramp they look lewd. And in case they do become a trend, please don’t become a follower.

Lehengas

are sensuous, showing your legs through them is not!

That power shoulder look, which went out with boardroom battles. Are you out to prove that you are the boss?
