Mahendra Singh Dhoni is playing the field — he’s got a new career spin-off. As a designer. And his collection, called D7, will soon be hitting stores across the country.
The captain of the Indian cricket team has turned his hand at designing for Reebok, the sportswear company for which he is already brand ambassador. Dhoni reveals that the line he has created is completely ‘him’. “The D7 collection is what I am comfortable wearing. The whole range has some part of me in it.”
The D7 collection takes its name from Dhoni and his lucky number 7 — that is not only the number on the jersey he wears but also on the locket around his neck. However, Dhoni’s ‘luck’ factor does not extend to any other area. “I don’t have any lucky colour or lucky outfit. I love wearing black.”

He joins a niche league of international sports icons-turned-designers, which includes the Williams sisters Venus and Serena, Rene Lacoste and Michael Jordan.
The cricketer is already a style icon in India whose every haircut spawns a million more. He confesses that he has no experience in fashion, but was involved in all areas of design of his collection, from colour and cut to choice of fabrics. “Nearly everything has got inputs from me. I have sat down with the designers personally and worked it out with them. I have given it my 100 per cent.”

He frankly says that he did no preparation before launching into the project. “I just went ahead with whatever I loved to wear and what I want to see people wear. I did not read up any sportswear magazine nor consult any designer. All this has come directly from the heart. I had fun designing everything.”
Turning designer has also allowed Dhoni to indulge his passion — biking. He has incorporated elements from that sport into his designs. “Yes, there are biker elements in the collection,” he confirms, refusing to reveal any more. “You will have to wait and see what’s in store.”
But this foray into fashion won’t mean Dhoni will lose his cricket focus. “I love playing cricket and am really passionate about it and nothing else.”
