Harnaam Kaur, a 25-year-old from Slough, Berkshire, who is popularly called the ‘Bearded Dame’, has made history of sorts by becoming the first bearded woman to hit the runway for a celebrity designer.
Kaur walked the ramp last week for American jewellery designer Marianna Harutunian at the Royal Fashion Day in London, realising her most cherished childhood dream, that of becoming a model.
Sporting a navy-blue skater dress and black combat boots, she dazzled in blingy accessories, a matching turban and bold red lips. We admire the confidence with which she has made an entry into the heavily-stigmatised world of beauty and fashion, a world she was not allowed to even dream of. Her mere presence here where she does not belong is an act of rebellion and hence is nothing short of inspiring to us.
I grew up watching America's next top model, and i admired @tyrabanks whole heartedly. I always wanted to be like the pretty models, so i remember copying the way they posed and walked. I grew up being told i was to fat, ugly, and disgusting to even model. I was told i'd never walk the runway. I used to look at models and tell myself that i will never ever be able to do what they are doing. I am not pretty enough or beautiful enough and i dont have the 'right' body type. I was laughed at when i said i wanted to model. Jokes on my bullies. I was lucky enough to walk for @mariannaharutunian as the first bearded lady to walk for a celebrity jewellery designer. I was humbled to be the first model to walk and open the show for #royalfashionday with the portrait of the legendary #davidbowie looking down on me! Every path is my runway! Walk with your head up high and ooze confidence always! Xx (my lifes quote) Dreams to come true! A huge thank you to @usfashionsource and @mariannaharutunian for scouting me and allowing me to walk for the jewellery brand. 📷- @jamesalexanderlyon thank you James for capturing a precious moment. The woman, who confidently sports a lush beard and moustache, has caught people’s fancy and taken the internet by storm, yet again. She was first noticed when the photographs of her bridal photoshoot with the London-based Urban Bridesmaid Photography went viral last year.
“I grew up watching America’s next top model, and I admired Tyra Banks wholeheartedly. I always wanted to be like the pretty models, so I remember copying the way they posed and walked. I grew up being told I was too fat, ugly, and disgusting to even model. I was told I’d never walk the runway. I used to look at models and tell myself that I will never ever be able to do what they are doing. I am not pretty enough or beautiful enough and I don’t have the ‘right’ body type. I was laughed at when I said I wanted to model. The joke is on my bullies,” she captioned a combination of two photographs from the runway that she posted on her Instagram account.
The last line of the caption reads: “Every path is my runway! Walk with your head up high and ooze confidence always!”
When she was 11, Kaur was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, a hormonal condition that makes you have excessive facial hair, so much so that she had to get them removed twice a week. Lots of ridicule, jibes and mockery followed, to the point that she shut herself up in her house and even contemplated hurting herself.
From being an ostracised teenager with an acutely low self-esteem to becoming a global campaigner promoting body positivity and a model in her own right, Kaur has come a long way.
“If only you could see your own self-worth and the gems that you have embedded inside your own beautiful heart. You have a heart of gold and you will empower many one day. Don’t you see it? Can’t you see just how amazing and beautiful you are?” Kaur had written in an open letter to her younger self after her unconventionally pretty bride caught attention worldwide.
That Kaur could see her self-worth and empower not just herself but so many others, is beautiful, much like her.
