A Sabyasachi bag for Rs. 500? This season, your modest budget wont stop you from buying a designer tote, Tshirt or umbrella.
Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) and IMG-Reliance, in association with Anamika Khanna, Sabyasachi, Wendell Rodricks and Manish Malhotra, have launched an eponymous line of merchandise for the first time. “When people come to a place like LFW, there is no product on sale. But people apart from big buyers also come to the venue. And they want inexpensive souvenirs to remember having gone there,” explains Anil Chopra, CEO, Lakme Lever.
“We discussed the concept at our advisory board meeting, and even the designers were very enthusiastic about doing something like this.” The slogan T-shirts (Rs. 500 onwards) have quotes by the designers on the front, as do the cloth tote bags. There are also designs available for kids, which will be put on sale at the business hub called The Source.
Khanna, who was one of the first designers to jump on board, says she wanted to do something for the young aspiring fashionista. "College kids may not be able to buy designer clothes, but they want something that’s fun and useable," she says.
Sabyasachi’s design reads ‘Eat Pray Eat: Don’t battle weight, the smock is here to stay’, a message the designer hopes will dispel some of the myths surrounding fashion. “I like doing message Tshirts because it helps change some of the myths propagated by the industry. Fashion can be very cruel, especially to women, who are forced to conform to a certain size,” he explains, adding, “The tote bag says ‘Buy, buy, buy, this bag won’t give way’, which is a tongue-in-cheek comment on ‘It’ bags, which are always out of fashion in six months anyway, no matter how expensive they are.”
