Grooms, stand back. Make way for the badass brides

From dramatic entries to sporting ‘kala chashma’, brides are taking on the world with their swag.

A far cry from ‘coy’ and ‘demure’, the new age dulhans are turning the bridal etiquette rule book on its head. Aesha Upadhyay Vyas, a computer science professor from Ahmedabad arrived at her wedding hall on a bullet earlier this year.

Another Indian bride carried her husband on her shoulders on her D-day. Her video got a lot of shares on social media recently. Many uninhibited brides in the city are sporting sunglasses on their wedding day. Brides are also teaming their wedding lehenga with fun sneakers. “I’ll wear my lehenga with sneakers. It’ll be comfy and will also make a style statement,” says Ayushi Bindal, an IT professional who is getting married soon. Bollywood too, is in love with the spunky bride.

The trend is making wedding planners in the city think out of the box. “Brides want to make the most filmy entries into their wedding venue. Be it dancing at the baraat or singing during their entry, brides now love to shake things up,” says Vishal Punjabi, founder, The Wedding Filmer. Agrees Abhishek Kaushik, founder, Designs By Abhishek: “Brides are now bindaas, bold and carefree. Once, a bride strolled into her wedding hall with burly bodyguards, and she had an airgun in her hand. We design sets keeping such filmy entries in mind.”

A Delhi bride makes a statement.

Reema Bhat, owner, Wedding Twinkles, says it’s to do with the modern women’s desire to liberate herself from social pressures. “Brides are now independent and outspoken. They have deep-rooted Indian values, and they balance it out with their quirk quotient. They are not the damsel in distress. They tell us what they want, which helps us plan a dhamakedaar entry,” says Bhat.
