‘I’m ready to prove myself’

Expanding on her own brand, designer Neeta Lulla's daughter Nishka joins Provogue team, reports Rochelle Pinto.

Nishka Lulla is a rather busy girl. After launching her own label and putting on a show at Lakme Fashion Week, she’s now designing for mega-brand Provogue.

Apparently inheriting her multi-tasking skills from mother, designer Neeta Lulla, Nishka is excited about the Provogue fashion show she styled for the Indo-American Excellence Awards. The show has led to Nishka’s designs being featured in their Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

“After I launched my brand, their team approached me to bring a fresh perspective to the brand. I was asked to style last night’s Autumn/Winter fashion show. But we’re in talks about a long-term association.”

Lulla has lent her ensemble approach to the Autumn/Winter line. “We’ve designed tees with matching cardigans so that the customer doesn’t have to worry about mixing and matching. The entire line is affordable so the tees start from around Rs.600 onwards.”

Lulla also raves about the collection’s jackets insisting that the “quilted and leather jackets are very cool and affordable.” The dresses she’s designed for summer also reduce the customer’s effort in dressing. “The dresses have attached necklaces so buyers won’t have to think about accessorising. I’ve also added textured backs like crochet in the cocktail collection for a different touch.”

The experience has also taught her to respect the conservative nature and preferences of the Indian customer. She pitches in with a style prediction - a straight fit for next season with ripped jeans taking precedence over cleaner cuts.
Ask her whether being Neeta Lulla’s daughter makes life easier for her and she responds, “There are high expectations, but I’m ready to prove myself. This is not an effort to get out of my mother’s shadow.”
