Delhi will see a star shower over the weekend, thanks to the upcoming couture week. Most of the designers participating at the Synergy1 Delhi Couture Week, to be held from July 22-25 at the Taj Palace Hotel, are planning to bring in Bollywood stars to either walk the ramp, or grace the front row. One of these is Madhuri Dixit, who’ll be attending a fashion week for the first time in Delhi.
Madhuri will be a front-row guest at designer Varun Bahl’s opening show on day one. “I have recently started doing outfits for Madhuri and when I asked her to join us, she agreed”, says Bahl.
Designer Manav Gangwani will have actors Lara Dutta, Esha Deol, Soha Ali Khan, Raveena Tandon, Dia Mirza and Zayed Khan attending his show. “If I have, say, 30 of my celebrity friends as audience, that will be entertaining,” says Gangwani. Designer Adarsh Gill has confirmed attendance from Sanjay Khan and wife Zarine Khan. “Sharmila Tagore will be our showstopper,” says designer Leena Singh from Ashima-Leena.
Designers Shantanu and Nikhil Mehra will have Sonakshi Sinha as their showstopper, even as star showstoppers were slammed during the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week held in March. “Since couture is all about luxury and aspirations, it makes sense for us to have a Bollywood star,” says Mehra. Organisers agree. “Designers want to add grandeur, which befits the couture theme, hence the expected celeb presence,” says Sunil Sethi, president, FDCI.

However, designer Manish Malhotra is amused: “I can only smile at the fact that Delhi designers are going big on star presence, as my shows have been criticised by the same people in the past for being ‘celebrity-oriented’.”
