With the Van Heusen India Mens Week around the corner, male models have a shot to strike it big. Having always played second fiddle to their female counterparts, this time, the spotlight’s on them.
Rahul Choudhry, who has been working in the industry for about two and a half years, insists that the situation has improved. “We’re getting more shows and many designers have started menswear lines. But the women still make more money because they have more shows.”
According to Choudhry, a really good month for him money-wise would mean an income of Rs one lakh. But for most female models with the same experience as him, that’s pocket change. "Women get paid more, especially if they’re big names," he admits.
Sahil Shroff, who has transformed himself from model to actor and talent show judge, believes that the only way for male models to keep themselves going is to constantly reinvent themselves. He says “Men have to be more multi-faceted. Women can make an entire career for themselves out of ramp modelling. I always knew I would have to do other things, so I tried acting.” It’s the work that is hard to come by, adds Shroff, “The number of shows have increased, but there are so many good models. The younger guys can’t make any demands; they have to prove themselves. That’s not the same with female models.”

{{/usCountry}}Sidharth Rawal says, “Men spend more time in the gym. But the returns on those investments for female models are more. They also get better facilities than us, though fashion weeks are trying to change that.” He adds, “A senior model was telling me that earlier male models would unite and demand a price. Now that the competition has increased, we can’t do that anymore.”
