The festive season may be over, but judging by the sumptuous eye make-up looks this spring, it's time to hit the beauty counter to stock up on eye shadow and liner to recreate this season's strong-lidded look.

If you invest in one product this spring, make it a smoky eye palette, like L'Oréal Paris's Colour Riche Eyeshadow quads.

Donatella Versace's stellar model army revived the trend for sexy dramatic eyes. Amber Heard, Eva Herzigova, Karlie Kloss and Jourdan Dunn all sported variations of the smoky eye in intense combinations of charcoal, grey and electric blue and winged eyeliner. Complete the look, like Versace runway make-up artist Pat McGrath, by adding iris-brightening white liner to the inner rims of the lower eyelids.

Liner art is gathering speed this season. Lucky for us, there are plenty of softer daytime-friendly alternatives to the smouldering looks à la Versace. At Giorgio Armani Privé, Linda Cantello showed us how to achieve dramatic eyes without black, using gold and sky blue arched Oriental-inspired liner art and a hint of pale eyeshadow.

Another twist on this spring's smudgy eye -- the "shimmery smoky" -- is easily achieved with a sweep of subtle gold shimmer teamed with pale brows -- as seen at Chinese-born, Paris-based designer Yiqing Yin's Haute Couture SS15 show.

Other runway-tested looks for spring included eyes all a-flutter with doll-like exaggerated false eyelashes and thick liner, as seen at the Stéphane Rolland Haute Couture SS15 show.
