Couture in the Capital is all about
lehengas, cholis, sarees
and gowns, but no menswear. All 13 participating designers (barring Manish Malhotra, who is doing a sponsored show) at the upcoming Pearls Delhi Couture Week, to be held from July 20 to 25, are ditching the men. Out of the 400 garments that will be on display, only around ten, all by Manish, are guy stuff.
The participants have bizarre excuses for leaving out the other sex. “I got to know about my show only on June 22. I was pressed for time, thanks to the kids’ vacation. Moreover, my collection is very small. So, I am concentrating only on women,” offers designer Rina Dhaka. Others second lack of time as the main reason.
“I do menswear, but there was no time. So many wedding orders are pending,” explains Pallavi Jaikishan. Designer Gaurav Gupta says, “Menswear does not fit into the frame of my collection.” The models list, too, does not have a single guy on it. So, Manish Malhotra is arranging for his own male models. “I want to make sure my pieces are well-walked. They are expensive and important,” he says.
Rohit Bal, however, has kept his collection under wraps, making male buyers hopeful of something in store for them. “Everything in my collection is a surprise,” is all he reveals. One wonders if the menswear fashion week slated for August gives designers enough excuse to equate ‘couture’ with womenswear. Internationally, couture has always been a mixed affair. Masters like Jean-Paul Gaultier and Ralph Lauren have never played favourites with the fairer sex.
