Model-turned-actress Aishwarya Sakhuja captured hearts across the nation with her debut leading role as Toasty in the TV show, Saas Bina Sasural. Despite being in the entertainment industry, Sakhuja prefers to keep it simple when it comes to dressing up. Here, she gets talking about her personal style.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion to me means making a very strong statement on your own. And not actually running behind the trends.
You have said in the past that you never follow trends.
I try and not follow trends because honestly if everybody is doing the same thing, how do you stand out? I prefer standing out, rather than being part of the rut!
In the past, you also said that you would even show up to a party in a T-shirt and jeans. Has being in the glamour world changed that or are you still the same?
Yes, I would show up to a party in a jeans and T-shirt, and I am still pretty much the same! That’s because I am very particular about the people I party with. These are the people who actually know me and accept me the way I am. They know that if they want me to be in a good mood I need to be very comfortable, and so jeans, a T-shirt and a pair of sneakers are my go-to comfort clothes.
You’re fond of shoes. Can you tell us a little about your footwear collection?
I have all sorts of shoes -- from furry heals to strappy boats to everything! My favourite type of shoes this season though has to be very strong boots. Not the girly ones but those cowboy type of boots. They are actually very difficult to get especially for me since I don’t wear leather. But I was luckily in the US recently and so happened to pick up quite a few leather-free ones, and now I am a happy girl!
Are you an impulsive shopper?
I am honestly not an impulsive shopper and just not a shopper in general anymore! I have now started to understand the concept of minimalism, and so I don’t shop unnecessarily. It has just become very need oriented.
Are there things in your wardrobe you’re attached to?
I find it extremely easy to give away stuff, so much so that at times I feel I’ve given away too much and have nothing left for myself. I am very attached to all the knits my mother made for me way back when I was in the 12th standard. I can still fit into some of them.
What’s the one fashion you’ll never give in to?
I am not into animal prints at all. You will never catch me wearing something like that. Because it is wrong to do that to animals. I would never ever wear fur, or a three-fourth length pants with a blazer. I just can’t imagine myself in that. It’s an very incomplete outfit according to me, even though it is a style statement for many.
What’s your take on online shopping?
Online shopping has definitely become a very convenient medium to shop on. But I am somebody who needs to touch and feel the material before buying it.
Who are your favourite designers/brands?
I have so many. For jewellery, I love Amrapali. In clothes, I think that Rohit Bal is exquisite. And so is Suneet Verma. There is something very royal about the way they make their women look! My favourite brand for make-up is Chanel, Gucci for perfumes, and Miss Selfridge and Lipsy for clothes.
