Judging by the preview shows of Bridal Asia 2008, it seems unconventional hues are the statement for brides to make this season. Detailed blouses and antique embroidery seem to be the other eye-catchers.
Old hands at work
Designer duo Muzaffar Ali and Meera Ali’s collection dazzled in traditional embroidery interpreted in modern application. While the couple are known for their palette of pale tones, this time they have experimented with colours like blue and silver. There is a strong emphasis on woven texture, with fitted outlines defining the ensembles. Designer Ritu Beri’s collection, on the other hand, is essentially opulent. Though Beri has worked on a pleasing colour palette with various tones of rose, dramatic add-ons like frills make the final impact rather garish. However, Beri’s best is evident in the detailing on her garments.
Young guns
At young designer Arpan Vohra’s preview, Mughal grandeur was at its bridal best. Vohra has created experimental ensembles, which, he hopes, will appeal to both Indian and NRI brides. While his collection magnifies the elegance of tones like red, emerald gold and yellow, the real impact of the garments is in their sensual appeal. Azara, the collection by the husband-wife duo Neeraj and Alpana, is unconventional to say the least. The ensembles draw heavily from tropical tones and motifs. Gota work and 3D embroidery enhance the clothes. Elisha Wadhwa, believes in making colours speak. Her designs with delicate cutworks and sequin make for an ideal expression of shy beauty. The USP of designer Vineet Bahl’s collection is its affordability. Priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000, the collection fuses Indian techniques like zardosi with international ones like rosette patches.

Besides these, designers Niki Mahajan, Gaurav Gupta, Rina Shah (Rinaldi) and Kiran Uttam Ghosh are all set to showcase their collections this Friday. While Gaurav Gupta has focused on drapes and shades of red in his collection, seasoned bridal wear designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh is trying to experiment with colours like blood red, fuchsia and tangerine. Designer Niki Majahan has attempted to create shimmer on her garments by using fall-over layers of sequin. In accessory, Rina Shah’s collection heavy on embellishment still remains her forte. She has also experimented with a palette of metallic shades —a flamboyant collection to say the least!
