The start of ever fashion season is all about new trends — and everyone always wants to know what’s new. The problem with this cycle is that you can fall into a trap, as always being ‘on season’ can be a very expensive, speculative business.

The best time to know which trends to invest in is during the season cross-over. With spring/summer about to end and fall/winter clothes about to make their debut in most stores, it’s time to be a smart shopper. Look for trends that worked well in spring, became stronger in fall and will be around next spring. There are trends that were new in spring/summer but will comeback in fall in a more decadent avatar.

There are also three hot looks of this season that you can bank on to see you through for the next one or two. Safely buy anything in flame tones, with punk panache or soft androgyny. These styles will be around for a while.

When New York’s Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute announced that their summer exhibition would be Punk: From Chaos to Couture, we knew that 70’s were about to make a comeback. Chanel, Versace and Alexander McQueen amp up all things punk next season. Look for rock-chic details: zips, studs, chains and even safety pins are embellishments to lust after. But remember, anything too costume like should be reserved for the museums.

Women borrowing from men’s fashion is not an entirely new concept. But, it is a trend that seems to be getting stronger every season. We saw it in the works of designers and labels across the globe including Dior, Nupur Kanoi and Abraham and Thakore in spring. Their designs include primarily taking male silhouettes and giving them their own, unique feminine touch. Be it the blazer, waistcoat, lungi sarongs or even the angrakha. But, with fall, it is about more than shape — as fabrics also become an add-on in the entire equation. Italian label Gucci and designer Rajesh Pratap Singh mastered these with absolute and true flair. Rajesh’s clever use of houndstooth, checks and the pinstripe earned him a standing ovation at the last fashion week. There is actually something very sensual about this trend. So, don’t be afraid to dress like a man. It is the ultimate statement of power dressing!
