Want handmade rain shoes?

These city designers are making sure your monsoon doesn’t have to be an unfashionable one.

If you’ve scoured the markets in search of trendy rainwear for the decidedly fashion-unfriendly monsoon, you’ve probably drawn a blank. But a couple of city-based designers have come to the rescue of the defenceless sartorialists, creating unique pieces of rainwear from capes and jackets to shoes.

AKA Bespoke, a trio of handmade bag and shoe makers, has created a line of delicately crafted monsoon footwear for men and women. Made of PVC and lycra, these bypass the traditional gumboots and strappy sandal style, offering options that could pass off as regular footwear.

“There are many people on the look out for high-fashion footwear for the monsoon. We’ve created a pair of women’s brogues out of lycra and PVC, which can be worn to dinner as well,” says shoemaker Ateev Anand. While their bags have also been on the fashion radar for a while, Anand admits they couldn’t make the materials work.

“Our bags are usually made of leather. Using plastic to make rain-friendly bags seemed tacky,” he says. Sonya Vajifdar’s new glitter and frill-covered raincoats might not be for the faint-hearted, but the designer insists her single-piece-only collection is drawing rave reviews.
