The past few seasons have seen a spate of overtly feminine outfits on the runways and in high street. From frilly dresses to girlie minis, the fashion verged towards a "not-a-girl, not-yet-a-woman" moment.

Fashionistas were seen flaunting the cutest dresses in the juiciest hues at all occasions. And before you knew it, lady-like fashion was the only way we seemed to know about dressing.

So it is good news indeed for lovers of mature fashion to see that major runways announce a strong masculine influence when it comes to dressing for women. At the Paris Fashion Week, everyone from Celine to Dolce and Gabbana showcased an interesting juxtaposition of mature fashion. High-waisted trousers were seen paired with slim belts.

Designer Ranna Gill says, "I am a big fan of trousers and love to showcase them on my runways." While it only seems favourable to don smartly-structured trousers as the season commands, experts suggest that the trend will be seen even through the spring season.

Item girl Malaika Arora Khan says, "While I am a jeans person, it is fun to dabble with trousers sometimes. It adds an intriguing appeal and that’s what I love about them."

But before you think if the trend means the comeback of the stiff, masculine dressing, then take a heart. Designer Swapnil Shinde says, "Trousers this season are smart, but not constricted. The fit and style can vary from slightly slouchy to tapered designs."

While the harem pants style trousers seem to be on their way out, a cleverly styled slouch is still a hot trend. At the Balmain show, different styles of trousers were seen.

Stylist Surily Goel says, "Every girl should invest in trousers, be it wide-legged, high-waisted, tapered and pleated trousers." The trick this season remains to go for an ultra glam look without going too flirty and feminine.

How to get the look right

Trousers are generally associated with formal dressing. But you can achieve a semi-formal or even a casual look by sensibly styling it. Go for a sleeveless tank top with slightly slouchy trousers. For the fitted ones, pair a cute tee in solid colour.

Accessorise your trouser look with simple accessories. A smart clutch and a pair of hoops would be a safe bet.
