The Gurgaon police on Thursday initiated a special drive to sensitise people about how to save accident victims.

As part of the drive, training would be imparted to traffic policemen, riders and PCR staff to ensure survival of victims in critical situations.

Police commissioner Alok Mittal released a poster with instructions about emergency medical services.

According to police, 14 people die every hour due to road accidents. Moreover, most of the victims are youths and the only earning members of the family.

In India, there is no dedicated EMS (emergency medical services) as in Britain or the US. Hence, a passerby is the first responder in accident cases. It has been noticed in past cases that people do not wait for ambulance and rush accident victims to hospitals in private vehicles, police said.

The city police plan to spread awareness among the public about how to safely rush victims to hospitals, without causing any further injury. “Generally, people try to make an accident victim sit. It can cause further damage to the patient if he/she has suffered neck or spinal injury. Internal bleeding can even cause brain haemorrhage,” said Dr Amar Chauhan, Ayushman Hospital and Trauma Centre.

“We should try to make accident victims lie on ground and breathe easily. Often, the main cause of death in accidents is loss of airway and excessive bleeding,” added Chauhan

Mittal said, “We will install the boards with the instructions at all the major intersections in the city.”
