Dundahera protests water shortage

Over 100 residents of Dundahera village on Old Delhi Road staged a dharna on Monday to protest acute water shortage and erratic supply in the locality. Even as the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is planning to lay a new pipeline network in the area, water supply is almost negligible.

Residents of Shakti Nagar locality in ward 21, too, are facing similar problems. Here also residents have not received water supply for about two months. The MCG officials continue to cite insufficient resources as the reason for the delay in laying the pipelines, as has been the case in many other parts of old Gurgaon.

In Dundahera, over 60 houses are depending on water supply from private tankers to meet their daily needs. “The MCG had at least supplied tankers last year when a similar situation arose but now we have to rely on private tankers which charge R700-1000,” said Neelam Gupta, a resident.

The village houses many people who cannot afford water from private tankers and have to make do with water from their neighbours. “We cannot spend on tankers.

The residents rue that they have brought the situation to the authorities’ notice several times in the past month, but to no avail. Asked about the continuing water scarcity, Vivek Yadav — the husband of ward 3 councillor Monika Yadav — who oversees the development work, said that the village had been provided with water tankers by the civic body.

“There was some disturbance in the detailed project report. The pipeline is decades-old and MCG could not lay new one as it did not have the required 6-inch pipes in stock. The work will start as early as tomorrow,” said Yadav.
