E-way snarls: Cops pin blame on NHAI, Huda

The city traffic police have blamed the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) for traffic jams on the Gurgaon Expressway.

“We have discussed the need for more service lanes, cloverleaf interchanges and loop lanes with both departments but we never received positive feedback. These facilities are must to decongest local traffic,” said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) traffic, Bharti Arora.

Major problem areas identified by the traffic police are Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Signature Tower and Iffco Chowk. NHAI and Huda officials, accompanied by the traffic police, inspected these sites three times in the past two months and three rounds of meetings were also held in this regard, but with no result.

“The commuters are facing huge snarls on the expressway and regulating traffic especially during rush hours is difficult.

This can be solved by constructing cloverleaf interchanges and widening of service lanes,” said the DCP, adding that officials of both departments had agreed to speed up work at a meeting with police commissioner KK Sindhu.

NHAI officials, on the other hand, claimed to have written letters to Huda several times regarding allotment of land along the expressway to widen service lanes.

“NHAI should first prepare a plan or project as to how and where exactly these facilities are required and then forward the proposal to Huda but that never happened,” said an official, adding that charging Huda with inaction is not the solution.
