The city police on Saturday installed CCTV cameras at Iffco Chowk, as part of their effort to enhance surveillance at busy intersections in the Millennium City. The move came after the recent spate of robberies at major junctions.

After the inauguration of the surveillance cameras by the Gurgaon police commissioner, Maheshwar Dayal, joint commissioner of police, said, “The initiative will ensure safety and security to the passengers. Incidents of robbery, theft, eve-teasing and traffic violation will be recorded. The control room of the cameras would be in my office.”

According to police, robberies involving cabbie gangs are on the rise. In a 10-part series, HT had highlighted the plight of commuters who become soft targets of such gangs.

Assistant commissioner of police (city) Bhupinder Singh said, “These cameras will help us keep tabs on movements of suspicious elements.”

The joint commissioner of police had passed directions to ACP (city) to initiate the work on the project.

In total, six intersections will have CCTV cameras. The other crossings that will come under round-the-clock surveillance include MG Road Metro station, Huda City Centre Metro station, Rajiv Chowk and Signature Tower.

The CCTV cameras will be monitored round-the-clock by two traffic police officials assigned the task by the ACP (traffic). With the installation of cameras at busy intersections, police will be able to check suspicious activities.

The five-member gang has robbed more than two dozen people but did not kill their victims.
