Delhi-Gurgaon expressway to get digital signboards

Soon, digital signboards also known as variable signage will be used to share real time information with commuters on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Soon, digital signboards also known as variable signage will be used to share real time information with commuters on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The Variable Message Signs (VMS) that will be installed by the highway concessionaire is to be managed from the highway traffic control room.

The highways concessionaire said that eight digital boards will become operational by the start of the next month. For initial installations, locations on the expressway where visibility is high are being identified, as proper placement of a VMS is critical for its effectiveness.

As per the Indian Road Congress (IRC) code, motorists must have adequate time to react to the message. The digital boards should be placed prior to major decision points, such as intersections or interchanges, where the driver may change travel plans.

On national highways or other access controlled freeways, placement of boards two kilometres ahead of the interchange/exit is recommended. It must be repeated at every 500 metres and placed 50 metres ahead of the decision point too.

The signboards on the expressway will be in full matrix with amber display. It will have dimensions of 3,000x1800 mm. The information will be displayed in English and a regional language, and controlled through a mobile (GSM) system from the highway control room.
