Gurgaon: Friendly I-Day Kabaddi match turns violent, 12 injured

Cops that rushed to the spot had a tough time in dispersing the fighting players who indulged in fist fights with some even brandishing weapons. As many as twelve players were injured in the fight, police said. Eight people were booked for the violence, though no one has been arrested yet.

The frenzy began after the results of the friendly match, between the teams representing two different castes played at Government senior secondary school premises, Chakkarpur, were announced in the evening. Since the losing team, representing an upper caste, did not accept the defeat, they started assaulting the players of the opposite team. Soon a posse of cops led by Inspector Surender Singh Phogat, station house officer (SHO) of Sector 29 police station reached the spot to control the fight. It took cops nearly half-an-hour to control the crowd.

“More than twelve people were injured in the fight who are being treated at a local hospital,” said assistant sub inspector (ASI) Kanwar Singh, the investigating officer.

Based on the complaint of one of the victims, Yogender Kumar, police lodged a case against seven accused at Sector 29 police station under different sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) including that of rioting (section 147), unlawful assembly (section 149), voluntary causing hurt (section 323), criminal intimidation (section 506) and other sections of Arms Act and SC/ST Act.

Those booked include, Rajpal, Kapil, Kuldeep, Ankush, Sahil, Amit, Deepak and Anil, all residents of Chakkarpur village.

“No one has been arrested yet. Most of the accused had fled from the spot when police reached. We are looking for them,” said ASI Singh.
