Gurgaon Golf Course Road repair eases snarls

Several engineering projects such Golf Course Road widening, construction of Sector 54 Rapid Metro station, shifting of a BPCL gas line and construction of an underpass at Genpact intersection led to the bad condition of the road.

A 100-metre broken stretch on the Golf Course Road between the upscale Magnolias and Summit Apartments in DLF Phase 5 that had become a bottleneck for commuters was repaired, reducing jams in the area.

The traffic volume on the road is high as several corporate offices, hospitals and high-end automobile showrooms are located on the stretch. The road also leads to Gurgaon-Faridabad Road and Golf Course Extension Road, leading to the convergence of traffic from various directions.

Several engineering projects were executed on the stretch in the last six months, resulting in the bad condition of the road. The projects included Golf Course Road widening, construction of Sector 54 Rapid Metro station, shifting of a BPCL gas line and construction of an underpass at Genpact intersection.

Such was the condition of the road during peak hours that it took commuters over 20 minutes to cross the stretch. After the repair, it takes them only five to 10 minutes.

“I used to take a two-kilometre detour near Kanhai village to reach my house from Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road. I had to take the Khatu Shyam road if I was coming from Golf Course Road. Although, the distance increases by two to three kilometres, the travelling time reduced by 15 minutes,” Kapoor said.

The road was fixed by DLF and Rapid Metro officials after their respective construction work on the stretch was completed.

Although parts of the road are still barricaded for the road-widening project, the main carriageway is free for traffic.

Meera Rai, of Summit Apartments on Golf Course Road, said the high level of pollution from vehicles stuck in jams spoiled the interiors of her apartment, forcing her to make changes.

“I had erected white curtains in my living room that covered the French windows. Soon, they started turning black because of the pollution from vehicles. Since then, I switched to using dark colour curtains,” Rai said.
