Gurgaon railway station gets a makeover with murals and landscaping

The city railway station in Old Gurgaon now sports a swanky look. Keeping in mind the comfort of commuters, more amenities have been added to the station, including air-conditioned waiting rooms, new and bigger toilets, and sheds and benches on the platforms.

The renovation work started around a year ago and is now in its final lap.

After registering an increase of around 30% in footfall this year, the station was upgraded to Grade A from Grade B and around Rs 3.5 crore was allocated for its revamp by the Northern Railway.

Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjeet Singh, who is also the minister of state for planning, has allocated around Rs 60 lakh from his MPLAD funds.

After the recent upgradation of the railway station, surface revamping of all three platforms has been done.

Keeping in mind the increase in footfall, the length of platforms has also been increased. The station has also added more sheds and repaired and repainted the broken ones.

Air-conditioners are being installed in the station’s waiting rooms to provide relief to commuters during summers.

To further beautify the station, landscaping has been done near the entrance. The walls of the platform, which earlier sported paan stains and peeling paint, are now adorned with murals made of colourful tiles.

“Gurgaon is also known as the cyber hub. It was necessary to renovate the station and make it look more presentable. We have worked very hard for last six months to introduce and improve facilities for passengers here,” said Arun Arora, Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi Division.

To resolve the issue of snarls around the station’s entry/exit gate, dedicated lanes have been provided with proper signage for both three and four-wheeler vehicles. The lanes have been able to decrease the congestion outside the station.

“These are short-term goals which have been completed. The railways plans to provide more amenities to passengers here and work will soon start to fulfil our long-term goals,” Arora said.

However, safety and security of passengers still remain an issue. The station does not have metal detectors or bag scanners at the entry points and CCTV cameras are yet to be installed.

“The Railways authorities are working to provide all amenities to passengers. Soon, the issue of security as well as other problems will be resolved and more facilities will be provided to people,” said Ajeet Kumar Srivastav, Senior Division Finance Officer, Delhi Division.
