Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) Road will be developed as a ‘smart road’, making it free of encroachments and illegal parking. This was decided at a meeting held between the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and traffic police officials on Tuesday.

MCG officials said the ‘smart road’ tag means an encroachment-free road which has ‘zero tolerance for illegal parking’. Both sides of the 4.7 km long stretch of the road — from Iffco Chowk up to Delhi border — have been selected for the project.

The mall mile on MG Road has been a regularly encroached upon by street vendors, shopkeepers and illegally parked vehicles. Despite regular drives by the MCG and the traffic police, the lack of an integrated effort led to the problem persisting.

Hence, last week, a joint team of the MCG, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda ) and the Gurgaon police was formed to monitor encroachments that are leading to snarls on major city roads.

The MG Road was selected as the pilot road for anti-encroachment drives. In the meeting, several areas where encroachments are rampant were discussed.

“It was finalised that the team of MCG, Huda and police will carry out anti-encroachment drives from Friday. The whole operation will be covered on video so that the footage can be used as evidence against repeat offenders,” SS Rohilla, spokesperson of MCG, said.
