Gurgaon to Gurugram: Gazette notification expected by next week

The new name has already been cleared by the Union ministry of home affairs and the state cabinet. The Haryana governor also cleared the changes last month. The name of Gurgaon city and the district will be changed once the gazette notification is released.

Keshni Anand Arora, additional chief secretary, revenue, said the order for printing the gazette notification was and the same would be in effect by the next week. She said the name change would require a modification of all official stationery.

On April 12, the Haryana government had announced the plan to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram and Mewat as Nuh citing the reason that residents wanted the name changed for historic factors. The government had sent a request to the Union ministry of home affairs on April 20 as the change in names of villages, towns, and districts need an approval from the ministry. The ministry gave the nod on September 22.

According to the Sanskrit epic Mahabharta, the area derived its name when princes Pandvas and Kaurvas donated land to their archery teacher Guru Dronacharya as gurudakshina (master’s fee). The legend goes that the guru reportedly trained the princes at this very place and used to live at the bank of a pond in Gurgaon village in old Gurgaon.
