Mahi death: Court defers order on plot owner’s bail

A city court on Thursday reserved its order on the bail plea filed by the land lord on whose plot an illegally dug-up borewell caused the death of four-year-old Mahi in Kho village in Manesar.

Rohtas Tayal, who is said to be the owner of the plot, moved an anticipatory bail plea on Wednesday after he was booked on Sunday for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The court of additional district and sessions judge Vikram Agarwal reserved its order till Friday.

Tayal pleaded not guilty and his lawyer Vishal Gupta argued that the 68-foot borewell did not fall on his property.

Gupta also told the court that the borewell was covered with a stone slab until June 20, when Mahi’s maternal uncle removed it as it hindered parking of his auto-rickshaw.

Gupta said that about 200 borewells have been dug up in the area in connivance with the local administration but only Tayal was being singled out. The police on Wednesday arrested two contractors —Himmat Singh Yadav and Satbir Singh — who dug up the borewell.
