The officials of the civic body had held a meeting with the state authorities last Friday in Chandigarh. The plan to acquire land and the project estimates have been sent for approval to the state government.

“The total cost of the project is estimated at R250 crore and the total length would be more than 4 km,” said a senior MCG official, adding that this would be the MCG’s most ambitious flyover project in the Millennium City since it came into existence on July 1, 2008.

The flyover will form a single, zigzag, elevated corridor from the Old Jail Complex in Rajiv Chowk to the roundabout near the Gurgaon station at Mahavir Chowk and from there on, it will be divided into two stretches.

Commuters from IFFCO Chowk can avail of the flyover near the Government College on Mehrauli Road to reach Rajiv Chowk — a roughly 2km-distance — uninterrupted by any traffic signal.

Currently, this stretch is highly congested and makes for a long commute. Similarly, commuters coming from the Maruti factory in Phase 1, Udyog Vihar, can ascend the flyover near Sham Sweets in Sector 14 on the Old Delhi Road to reach Rajiv Chowk.

“As many as seven departments will have to transfer land for the proposed flyover between the Old Jail Complex and Mahavir Chowk,” disclosed the official.

“A meeting of official representatives from all these departments is likely this week, as once this issue is resolved and the project estimate is approved, construction will commence,” the official added.

It may be noted that the MCG has long been planning to decongest Old Gurgaon’s traffic which includes underpasses, foot over bridges and flyovers at several stretches on busy roads. But commuters’ woes have continued unabated, making this flyover a much needed relief from severe traffic jams.

“The flyover would bring relief to tens of thousands of commuters who struggle currently through unending traffic jams on this stretch which traffic cops find difficult to manage,” said Subhash Singla, a councillor from the area.
