More men, machines to drive MCG’s clean plan

The residents of Old Gurgaon can expect better sanitation as the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has planned to double the strength of its sanitary staff and introduce advanced sweeping machines and other equipment in the next financial year.

According to a senior official, the strength of sanitation staff will be increased up to 3000 from the existing 1600.

At least two advanced sweeping machines will be introduced and more dustbins will be kept at various places for collecting degradable and non-biodegradable wastes.

The official said that by end of April, one sweeping machine will be introduced on trial basis and the other machine will be procured later.

“The machines (each cost around Rs 65 lakh) will be used first time in the city,” said a senior MCG official, adding that the machine will sweep roads and streets and pick up waste materials and dispose it off to designated sites.

The MCG has awarded tenders to private contractors for sanitation works that include collecting household garbage and cleaning roads as well as drainages. At present, nine contractors are engaged in sanitation works in the MCG areas and their contracts are ending by end of March.

Many colonies of the Old Gurgaon area and villages, which fall under the jurisdiction of the MCG, have bad road condition and drainages. Sweeping machines will be of little help in those areas.
