The meat shops that recently obtained licences from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will put up display boards over their shops to ensure reliability and quality.

Dr Ashish Singla, medical officer (MO), MCG, said, “Enforcement of the licence criteria is important. The shops will have to display the authorisation copies and put up signboards saying they deal in halal or jhatka meat and use clean chopping slabs. This will be critical to avoid being penalised.”

MCG issued licences to as many as 25 meat shops. The city has over 500 meat shops operating without licences.

“We will issue licences to another 25 meat shops. The process is underway and many other applications are pending. We won’t issue licences till the shops meet the criteria. We urge consumers to purchase meat from licensed shops,” said the MO, adding that the MCG will crack down on illegal meat shops soon.

The shops that have obtained licences have already put up display boards as mandated by the rules.

Vikas Adalkha, a meat shop owner at Shivpuri, said, “I applied for a licence about a month ago. I made changes to my shop to meet the licence criteria. An MCG team conducted an inspection of my shop as well. My family has been into meat business for generations. We wanted licence to ensure reliability to our customers and the feedback, so far, has been very positive.”

The only problem for meat sellers in Gurgaon is that the Ghazipur abattoir from where they source their paraphernalia is located far away.

“The abattoir plan in Gurgaon is at an advanced stage. It got delayed due to objection with proposed sites by residents over the last five years, but now, a new site has been identified,” a senior MCG official said.
