One-month festival: A cultural coupe for Gurgaon

Going beyond maintenance of civic infrastructure, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon is all set to bring a month-long cultural festival for the residents of the Millennium City.

Culture enthusiasts in the city have a reason to rejoice. A month-long cultural festival of plays and music performances including a qawwali night will make Gurgaonites eagerly wait for revery Friday evening.

Starting from July 2, the cultural nights will witness flourishing artists from Delhi-NCR and Haryana. The event organised by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) is curated to promote art and culture in the city is open to all, without any cost. “The motive is to spread awareness about social problems through plays and to promote local art and artists. We have been orgainising such events for the past one year and the increasing response has made us plan this event at a much bigger venue,” says VD Tirkha, consultant (art and culture), MCG.

The play Guldasta will kick-start the events. The narrative is a compilation of four short plays by Avighn Theatre Group. Suhasini Rastogi, director of Guldasta says, “This compilation of four short plays, originally written by four prominent writers, is adapted in Hindi for the audiences. The stories include Badanami - an adaptation of a Russian play by Anton Chekhov, Aabra Ka Dabra - adaptation of JB Priestley’s play, Sabun Ki Tikiya - an adaptation of HH Munro’s play and Refund - an adaptation of Fritz Karinthy’s play.”

Qawwali singer Geeta Chisti will present her self-composed songs on the qawwali night. She says, “Gurgaon has always surprised me with the response and I hope that they will like the performance this time also.” The artist has planned to sing songs such as Chhaap Tilak Sab Chheeni and Kaisi Hogi Shifa Ham Nahi Jante.
