Power cables along Sohna Road to go underground

Putting to rest safety concerns over 11,000-volt cables along Sohna Road, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) has finally agreed to fund the project to put the wires underground along the seven-km stretch between Rajiv Chowk and Badshahpur. Dhananjay Jha reports.

The funding condition was put forward by the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN).

After a recent meeting between engineers of the two departments, Huda agreed to pay approximately R30 crore, or more in case costs escalates, for execution of the project in two phases.

A firm with international repute will prepare the layout design and final estimate.

"We have roped in a New Delhi-based firm that had worked with the Delhi government during the Commonwealth Games. The company will prepare the estimate for the first phase of the project that will cover the stretch between Subhash Chowk and Badshahpur," said Sanjiv Chopra, superintending engineer (SE) DHBVN, adding that the company has begun survey work on Sohna Road.

"The cost, however, may escalate since the wires will be laid underground in non-metallic pipes to be laid at least 20 feet deep," said the SE, adding that digging work may incur more costs.

Huda, the custodian authority of Sohna Road, and DHBVN engineers will discuss the survey report in next round of meeting after it is submitted later this week.

The Huda Master Plan 2012 has provision for an underground cable system but the said stretch was chosen only about two years ago.
