The company is also trying to acquire land near the Sikanderpur metro station for setting up a parking lot, while another parking lot is proposed to be set up at the Sector 56 metro station.

The service on this route is likely to start next year by September. Rajiv Banga, managing director and CEO, IL&FS Rail Limited, on Friday said that coaches for the second phase of rapid metro have been ordered and these would be tested once the civil work is completed. "The trains are finally coming for the second phase, and this will help us in expanding the network." he added.

Banga also said that new alignments for the metro rail to cover Old Gurgaon and Palam Vihar were being evaluated. "We are looking for land near Sikanderpur, and other areas to create parking which will boost ridership." he said.

On whether it was viable for a private company like Rapid Metro to run a public transport system, Banga said that the future would entail more private sector participation in developing infrastructure and profitability depended upon the concession period.

As far as expansion of the metro network across Old Gurgaon and Udyog Vihar is concerned, Banga said that three different proposals were under consideration of the government and the best plan would be chosen.

He also lamented that there was a perceived reluctance to use public transport in the city but all efforts would be made to make behavioural changes
