The meters will help in checking the amount of water extraction by every tubewell. A special task force headed by Gurgaon deputy commissioner PC Meena has been set up.

Besides, tubewells being used for commercial purposes will be sealed. The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) has declared Sohna Road a “dark zone” due to its depleting groundwater levels. The main reason for this is extensive use of tubewells — the prime source of drinking water in Gurgaon.

“Residential complexes of more than 100 square metre will have to get rainwater harvesting system installed. No request to set up a new tubewell will be entertained,” Meena said.

“I appeal consumers to install water meters before the CGWA deadline. Tubewell owners have been asked to intimate us after the installation of meters and keep the records for audit,” Meena added.

Strict action will be taken against violators and their tubewells would be sealed under the Environment Protection Act.
