A private school struck off the names of a brother-sister duo after it found that the BPL card their parents had produced for admission was created on false information about family income.
The brother-sister duo, students of class 6 and 7, had been studying in the school for the last six years. Their father is a daily-wage earner. According to the school, their father earns more than the prescribed minimum annual earning to qualify as a Below Poverty Line (BPL) cardholder.
The city administration has intervened into the matter with the deputy commissioner declaring that he will ensure the education of the two students and provide the best possible support on “humanitarian grounds” to their parents.
“We got their BPL card checked and found they are not eligible for the card. Legally, we cannot help them. We cannot pressurise any school to admit them free of cost. But we have decided to help them on humanitarian grounds. We will talk to some schools or NGOs and get them admitted,” deputy commissioner PC Meena said.
The matter came to light on Tuesday when Rock Convent School at Sector 10 (A) refused to accept the admission of the two students for the next academic session. The students are the eldest among six siblings. The girl had passed Class 5 in March and moved to Class 6 while the boy had joined Class 7. The school authorities could not be contacted for their version.
