Soon, panel to check fining of state buses

Officials of Haryana Roadways and workers’ union of the department may soon collaborate to constitute a committee to ascertain the merits of rampant challaning of state buses by Delhi police, said Arun Kumar, director general of state transport.

The joint committee would also videograph the challan process for the purpose.

Kumar proposed the move at a meeting with representatives of the Haryana Roadways workers’ union.

The meeting had been called in response to the employees’ demand that the state government bear the penal amounts of the challans issued on account of rash driving, speeding and faulty parking, among other traffic rule violations by drivers in Delhi. Kumar told the union that the state government would not be able to meet the demand.

He said the government cannot encourage violation of traffic rules and thus, could not agree to the demand.

He said safe driving was a pre-condition to the issuance of driving licences and to that extent traffic rules needed to be complied with.
