Surrogacy not wrong if done happily: Ram Jethmalani

Gurgaon: Surrogacy should be voluntary and taken up with happiness rather than on a consideration for financial gains, 94-year-old lawyer Ram Jethmalani said.

Jethmalani was speaking on ‘Intricate Constitutional Issues including Uniform Civil Code and Surrogacy’ that was the theme for the moot court inaugurated by him at Amity University, Manesar on Friday.

“This is not a question of the third party, a woman has to decide if she is willing to go for it. Nothing is wrong if you are happy... No women should be compelled to do it...” Jethmalani said.

The Supreme Court had passed a judgment recently banning commercial surrogacy.

Jethmalani said it is a very suitable topic for students to research on.
