How do you mould creativity? For some, like artist Anju Kumar, creativity gets defined in the medium of pottery that she lends shape by seeking inspiration from mother nature. Creating art for 27 years, Kumar is back with her annual show, titled Perspectives, this year.

“I visualise what I want to create, before I mould it. But, the process of creativity is endless as one strives perfection,” says the 53-year-old, who has created functional pieces of pottery, and canvases for this show.
She sinks her hand in clay and gives form to sculpture with such ease that the art appears to be akin to her being. “Even If I work with 10 mediums, clay is my first love and I identify with it a lot. It’s such a flexible medium, in which one can create everything from nothing. The kind of intricate texture one can make with terracotta is impossible in other mediums,” explains Kumar who has used an earthy palette for pottery but vibrant hues for her canvases.
Her forte, however, remains to create liveable art that blends imagination and craftsmanship. Kumar says, “We have immensely talented craftsmen today. With proper channelisation, pottery can provide many opportunities to further develop their creative abilities.”
