This is in comparison to the figures of 2011, when 2.56 lakh traffic violators were fined and Rs 5.42 crore was collected.

Traffic police officials said they had launched challaning campaigns throughout 2012 and by November, they had already issued 2.55 lakh challans as against the highest ever figure of 2.56 lakh in 2011.

They further stated that they had set their target to challan more than three lakh traffic violators last year.

For this, the department had deployed exempted assistant sub inspectors (EASIs).

Though the EASIs were not authorised to issue challans and penalise erring drivers, the department deployed them for better policing.

Traffic officials said on an average, 1,000-1,200 challans are issued to erring drivers on a daily basis in the city.

DCP (east) Maheshwar Dayal told Hindustan Times, "Our major drives have not only generated revenue but also have decreased cases of drunk driving compared to the figures of 2011. We wanted to create awareness among people."
