Two men held in Gurugram for carrying 26 puppies in car’s boot

Police said the accused, identified as Ranbir Singh and Gurmukh Singh, hail from Sangrur district in Punjab and were involved in the business of selling puppies of foreign breeds, including Labradors, Rottweilers, pugs and German Shepherds to customers in Uttar Pradesh.

Police arrested two men on charges of animal cruelty after they were accused of carrying 26 puppies in the boot of their Maruti Swift Dzire from Pataudi on Tuesday morning.

According to the investigating officer, head constable Uday Veer, the accused, identified as Ranbir Singh and Gurmukh Singh, hail from Sangrur district in Punjab and were involved in the business of selling puppies of foreign breeds, including Labradors, Rottweilers, pugs and German Shepherds to customers in Uttar Pradesh.

“Their car was intercepted at a barricade near Narhera village around 3am on Tuesday and during inspection, it was found that 26 puppies had been kept in boxes in the boot of the car. One of the puppies was six months old, while most of them were one to two months old,” Uday Veer said.

Police said the accused confessed to carrying the puppies for sale to a dealer in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. The accused were arrested, produced in court and later released on bail.

Police said the puppies were in a healthy condition, but were cramped for space inside the boot of car, with no provision for food and water. A case has been registered under section 11/59/60 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act at Pataudi police station, police said.
