The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has increased the water tariff by 45 paisa per kilolitre, effective from April 1 this year. The current tariff is Rs9 per kilolitre. Residents will now have to pay Rs9.45 per kilolitre. The GMDA monthly bill with revised tariff will be sent to residents by May 15.

In a GMDA meeting held on August 3 last year, a proposal for an annual increase of 5% in water tariff was placed in the agenda. “In the GMDA meeting, it was approved that from April 1 of every financial year water tariff will be increased by 5%. Those who make online payment will get 5% rebate in the total amount. This is an incentive for users to pay water bill on time,” GMDA chief engineer Lalit Arora said.
Water tariff was last increased in January 2017 by the HSVP to Rs10 per kilolitre. The decision had created resentment among residents after which the rate was revised to Rs9 per kilolitre by June that year after intervention of the chief minister.
Reacting to the hike, Sector 4 resident Dharam Sagar said, “The GMDA has failed to crack down on the water tanker mafia and defaulters. The GMDA should work on that instead of increasing tariff.”
